Storage Service Encryption for Azure File Storage

Azure File Storage uses the SMB 3.0 version and is like a normal file share where you can map drives to it. Like normal blob storage which already benefits from Storage Service Encryption, Azure Files Storage is now the first fully managed file service offering encryption of data at rest.

Microsoft handles all the encryption, decryption and key management in a fully transparent fashion. All data is encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption, also known as AES-256, one of the strongest block ciphers available.

Updates to Dev/Test Labs

We shipped the following key features since November:

Managed disks support

Claimable VMs: With this, lab admins can prepare VMs and put them in a shared VM pool; lab users can then pick, also know as “claim”, a VM from the pool for them to use without spending any time to create it from scratch.

Batch creation of identical VMs: DevTest Labs supports the creation of multiple, identical VMs from the same VM image and artifacts all at once. The only additional thing you need to do is to provide the number of VM instances in the advanced settings when you create a VM. The VM quota policies set at the lab level still applies regardless of how many VMs you are going to create.

VM auto-expiration: You can now also set an expiration date/time when you create a VM. At the specified expiration date/time, DevTest Labs will automatically delete the VM.

Shared public IP address: DevTest Labs provides a solution to share the same public IP address with a group of VMs. Once a VM uses a shared public IP in the lab, it will be automatically assigned to a unique port number, which will be used together with the shared public IP address when you connect to that VM.

The Azure Cloud Shell provides an authenticated browser-based bash shell experience hosted in Azure and accessible from anywhere. Currently the Azure CLI v2 is supported as well as commonly used CLI tools such as shell interpreters, Azure tools, text editors, source control, build tools, container tools, database tools, and more. The Azure Cloud Shell also includes language support for several popular programming languages such as Node.js, .NET, and Python However coming soon you’ll be able to run your own Azure based PowerShell cmdlets directly from Azure Cloud Shell as well.

Azure Cloud Shell runs entirely on containers orchestrated by Kubernetes.
